Lixing Lao, Ph.D., CMD (China), L.Ac.

Lixing Lao, is a Professor of Family Medicine and the Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Program in the Center for Integrative Medicine (CIM), University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine. He became NAF board member in 2006. He is currently a guest professor in the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, China. Dr. Lao graduated from the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in 1983 after 5 years training in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and Western Medicine. He completed his Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 1992. As a licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Lao has practiced acupuncture and Chinese medicine for more than 20 years. He joined the CIM of the UMB in 1992, and has been actively involved in patient care, teaching and research. Dr. Lao has conducted and participated several clinical trials including recently published large clinical trial on the effect of acupuncture on knee osteoarthritis. He established the laboratory of TCM research in UMB in 1999 to conduct basic science studies on acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and leads a lab research team.

As a principal investigator or co-investigator, Dr. Lao has been awarded grants from the NIH and the US Army Breast Cancer Research Program to conduct research on acupuncture and TCM. He has been actively published many peer-reviewed scientific papers. He has also given over 140 presentations at national and international conferences/symposia. He was awarded for his outstanding contribution in TCM by AOM Alliance (2004), TCM World Foundation (2005), and Chinese TCM Association in China (2003). Dr. Lao served as a Board member for five years on the Maryland State Board of Acupuncture. He is the elected co-president of the Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR). He was a member of the PDQ Cancer CAM Editorial Board, National Cancer Institute, NIH, and is currently a member of either the advisory board or editorial board on the Journal of Alternative Therapies, the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine and the Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology.
